One of the main ones is to make sure I always shred the leaves first. If you don't, they are more likely to create an impenetrable mat that actually causes your soil to suffer. Another thing I make sure to do is create mulch layers no more than 3-4 inches deep. That also can block oxygen and water too much. Both of those things are also critical pest-wise. Thick mats of leaves can create ideal conditions for overwintering pests, so ensuring that air still flows through can decrease your risk of pest problems. What I'll also do is avoid using leaves as mulch in any areas that have had pest issues already that year. Leaving those spots exposed to the winter weather is the better strategy for trying to prevent a pest problem from persisting over the winter months.

Send excess clean leaves into planting beds after shredding, using a loose 5 to 8 centimetre layer. Keep that layer away from plant crowns, stems and tree trunks so it cannot trap moisture or smother growth. Remove diseased leaves, pest-infested debris and fallen fruit rather than recycling them around susceptible plants. The lowest-effort autumn routine is to work little and often while leaves are dry. Clear paths and drains first, move those leaves onto the lawn, then mow twice. Transfer any excess into beds rather than leaving thick mats over the grass.

I own one and find that it makes collecting fallen leaves much easier. I cannot give a tested model comparison or a measured time saving, but it is a practical difference I have experienced.
For deciding where leaves go, I would clear walkways first and avoid leaving a dense mat over the grass or delicate plants. A light layer of dry leaves can be mulch-mowed into the lawn; excess leaves can go to suitable beds or compost.
I have not compared those mulching methods in my own beds, so my firsthand recommendation is the collector for manageable cleanup. The habit I would adopt is a short, regular pass before the leaves become a heavy wet layer, rather than waiting for one large cleanup.
