16 Simple Diy Projects that Elevate Home Decor

One of my favorite DIY projects that really elevated our home decor was a handmade wooden storage chest that doubles as a toy box and a coffee table. I built it using custom-milled pine boards and some basic joinery. Then I stained it with an oak color to match our living room's aesthetic. It cost me around $80 in materials and a weekend of time, but the impact was huge.

With three kids running around, toys used to be everywhere. We needed a way to keep things tidy without sacrificing style. So I designed the chest to look like a clean and modern but rustic piece of furniture with simple lines, soft-close hinges, and a smooth finish. I built it with deep storage inside for all the kids' clutter.

Now, instead of fighting the toy explosion, we just toss everything into the chest, close the lid, and boom... The living room is back to looking clean and put-together. It's become a staple piece in our home, and because I built it myself, there's a sense of pride that you just don't get from store-bought furniture.

What makes this project special is how personal it is. I customized the dimensions to fit our space exactly. I chose a finish that tied our whole room together. And because I made it by hand, it feels like it truly belongs in our home. It's not just decor, it's functional craftsmanship that serves our family every day.

For any DIYer, especially someone just getting started, this is the kind of project I highly recommend. You don't need a full shop of tools or fancy skills. Just a circular saw, drill, wood glue, clamps, and some patience. Plus, you end up with something beautiful and useful.

This project taught me that DIY isn't just about saving money, but it's also about creating pieces that fit your life, your style, and your story.

As an experienced interior designer, I often DIY some simple interior decorations.

One of my favorite DIY projects is creating a custom gallery wall with used picture frames and personal memorabilia, which always enhances the home decor.

1. A well-designed gallery wall

A well-designed gallery wall allows you to choose from an eclectic mix of frames: browse thrift stores and flea markets for mismatched frames in all sizes, shapes, and finishes (wood, metal, vintage styles). It's best to avoid a uniform style or pattern - the texture and variation add charm!

Treat the frames, including sanding and painting, to make them visually blend in. Leave some natural wood or distressed finishes to create contrast.

2. How to personalize your space:

Objects tell stories: Each object in the gallery tells a unique story - whether it's a postcard from the honeymoon or a child's sketch, you can turn blank walls into visual memories.

Flexible self-expression: Unlike store-bought art, you can keep your gallery up to date as your life develops - by changing out new mementos, rearranging picture frames, or adding seasonal elements (e.g., holiday cards for December).

3. Styling tip

Add a small shelf below the gallery for interchangeable decorations such as a bouquet of flowers, a favorite candle, or a pot of mini plants. This will connect the display with the mood of the room and liven it up.

As someone deeply immersed in the world of virtual staging, where I digitally transform vacant properties into appealing homes, the line between the virtual and the real often blurs. When I finally purchased my own place, I was eager to infuse it with the same personalized touch I strive for in my digital designs. Surprisingly, one of the most manageable DIY projects that significantly elevated my home decor was creating a gallery wall in my living room.

Initially, the large, blank wall felt sterile and impersonal. In my virtual staging work, I frequently use gallery walls to add character and warmth to a space, showcasing a curated collection of art or photographs. This gave me the initial inspiration. However, translating that digital concept into a physical reality felt a bit daunting. I'm used to arranging images with a few clicks, not hammering nails and ensuring perfect spacing!

Virtual staging actually played a crucial role in the planning process. Before even touching a nail, I digitally mocked up several gallery wall arrangements using photos of my actual wall and a collection of prints and photographs I had gathered. This allowed me to experiment with different layouts, frame styles, and spacing without making any permanent holes. I could visualize how various pieces would interact and find a composition that felt balanced and aesthetically pleasing. This iterative digital process saved me from potential layout mishaps and ensured I had a clear plan before starting the physical installation.

Once I settled on a design in my virtual mock-up, the actual DIY was surprisingly straightforward. I gathered lightweight frames in a cohesive color palette, printed my chosen artwork and photos, and carefully measured and marked the nail positions on the wall based on my digital blueprint. Using a level ensured that everything hung straight, and the pre-planned layout made the hanging process efficient and stress-free.

The resulting gallery wall has completely transformed my living room. It's now a focal point that reflects my personal taste and interests, showcasing a mix of travel photography, abstract art prints, and a few cherished family photos. It's a constant conversation starter and adds a layer of warmth and personality that was previously missing. This simple DIY project, inspired and planned with the aid of virtual staging principles, has truly made my house feel more like a home, filled with visual stories that are uniquely mine.

I've added floating shelves with hidden brackets in both my living room and kitchen. As someone in the real estate business, I've found that these improve functionality and enhance style. Hidden brackets especially keep things looking sleek and clean, and less bulky. In the kitchen, I use the shelves to display dishes and a few small plants. It makes the space functional and looks better. In the living room, these shelves are perfect for photos, books, and all sorts of personal touches that make the room feel like home without the clutter.

I really like these shelves because they manage to organize the space while still keeping it open, which is a win whether you're in a large home or a snug apartment. I chose a wood stain for the shelves that matches perfectly with my floors, tying everything together. Even a subtle upgrade like this can increase your home's value and attract potential buyers.

I built a kitchen vertical herb garden from repurposed wooden crates and filled mason jars. To create the vertical garden, I attached the crates to my wall and then filled jars with soil and herbs before tagging each one by hand. Indoor greenery enhances the space while the fresh herbs provide ready ingredients for cooking. The combination of rustic aesthetics and functional design in my space makes every basil and mint harvest a reminder of my natural roots. That small addition transformed my kitchen into a cozy, natural space that truly reflected my personality.

For me, adding some pattern and color through wallpaper has been a great DIY project at home. I've seen wallpaper making a bit of a comeback over the past several years, especially as it becomes easier to apply and remove. When applying it myself, I've found that it's not as much of a hassle as it used to be, especially if you're using an option like peel-and-stick wallpaper.

I love using wallpaper to add a personal touch because there are so many unique patterns you can choose from. My favorite way I've used it at home has been an accent wall in the bedroom, but I've also used wallpaper borders as a way to bring in some visual interest and really make a room feel unique.

If you want to add a touch of elegance and personality to a space, a tone-on-tone painted wall with picture frame molding is a fantastic way to do it. It's one of those classic design tricks that never really goes out of style.

Start by picking a soft, muted color--something in the green family works beautifully. Think olive, moss, or sage. These shades have a natural richness to them and set a sophisticated tone without being loud. Once you've got your color, paint the wall first. That'll be your base.

Next comes the fun part: the molding. You can use lightweight wood or MDF trim--whatever fits your budget and tools. Lay out the frames however you want, but take your time to get them level. Trust me, uneven molding is the kind of thing that'll bug you every time you walk past it. Once they're up, give them a coat of primer and then paint them the exact same color as the wall. That's what gives it that sleek, seamless, high-end look.

And don't skip the finish--it makes a bigger difference than you'd think. I went with a satin finish here, and it was the perfect choice. It catches the light just enough to make the color feel rich and dynamic, without getting shiny or distracting.

Overall, it's a pretty approachable project, but the end result looks like you hired a designer. It adds texture, depth, and a quiet kind of luxury that really pulls a room together.

Installing floating vinyl plank flooring with a herringbone pattern in my entryway completely transformed the home's first impression. While standard straight installations are common, I experimented with this diagonal pattern that created visual interest and made the space appear larger. The click-lock system made it achievable without professional tools, though precise cutting was essential for the angled pieces. Visitors consistently comment on the custom look, never suspecting it was a weekend DIY project that cost under $400 for a 100-square-foot space.

One weekend, I decided to spice up my living room with a simple DIY floating shelf project. It was surprisingly easy and cost-effective, and it allowed me to display some personal items that I love. I gathered some wood, brackets, and a can of stain from the local hardware store. After measuring and cutting the wood to fit the space on my walls, I stained them a dark walnut to complement the existing furniture and fixtures in my room.

Adding that floating shelf not only gave me extra storage space but also added a touch of warmth and modernity. It's a perfect spot for my collection of vintage cameras, a few favorite books, and small potted plants. This project not only enhanced the aesthetic of the room but also made the space feel more like my own. It's amazing how such a small change can completely transform and personalize your living area.

A simple DIY project that can elevate home decor while adding a personal touch is creating a custom accent wall with peel-and-stick wallpaper or wood paneling. This project is surprisingly easy and instantly transforms a space without major renovations.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper is perfect for renters or homeowners who want a non-permanent change. Choose a pattern or texture that complements your style, whether it's a modern geometric design, a subtle linen texture, or a bold floral print. For a more rustic or contemporary feel, wood paneling, such as shiplap or reclaimed wood, can add warmth and character to a room.

The key to a polished look is careful alignment and patience. Clean the wall thoroughly before applying, measure and cut precisely, and smooth out air bubbles as you go. If using wood panels, ensure they're level and secure with adhesive or nails.

This DIY project personalizes a space by making it feel intentional and unique. Whether it's a statement wall in the living room, a cozy bedroom backdrop, or a stylish entryway, it adds depth and personality without requiring extensive work.

Creating a personalized floral wall for my living space.

Using a basic frame and faux flowers in my favorite colors, I crafted a feature wall that became an instant focal point. This project not only added elegance but also brought a sense of warmth and personality to the room. It reminded me of the importance of infusing spaces with elements that reflect care and creativity. As an entrepreneur, I've learned that small, thoughtful details can make a big impact, both in business and in life. It's all about finding ways to express your style and make your surroundings feel uniquely yours.

One of the best DIY projects I've done to elevate home decor was creating a vertical herb garden using reclaimed timber. With my years of experience in gardening and landscaping, I knew that maximizing space while adding greenery would not only make the area visually appealing but also provide a functional touch to the kitchen. I carefully selected a variety of herbs like rosemary, basil, and mint, ensuring they were suited to the light conditions of the space. By using my horticultural knowledge, I designed a tiered system that allowed proper drainage and air circulation, preventing root rot and keeping the herbs healthy. The reclaimed timber added a rustic charm, making the piece feel like a natural extension of the home rather than just a decorative element.

This project personalized my space by bringing nature indoors in a way that was both stylish and practical. The fresh scent of herbs filled the kitchen, and having homegrown ingredients within arm's reach made cooking more enjoyable. My background in horticulture helped me choose the right soil mix and watering schedule to ensure long-lasting growth. This wasn't just about aesthetics; it was about creating something that seamlessly blended beauty with function. The result was a stunning, self-sustaining feature that reflected both my passion for gardening and my commitment to thoughtful, sustainable design.

Framed and mounted pictures seem like such an obvious answer, but it's a simple tweak that has elevated the interior of my house. It was easy to pick the pictures to frame as I absolutely love keeping memories, and my husband loves to take pictures. In our sitting room and study, there are giant framed portraits of family gatherings and important landmarks and achievements. It has really elevated the look of my house, as visitors never fail to comment positively about it. The good thing about it is that these photos aren't just decorative; they tell the story of our lives and help showcase our personality and experiences. It's a reminder of the special moments we've shared, and it makes our home feel more inviting and personal.

I love framed pictures because, apart from the frames that can make them look better, their beauty is decided by how your personality shows in the pictures. This is what makes them much preferable to generic art or impersonal prints.

My husband and I love our wines! Since we occasionally find very nice wines at a very fair price, we got into the habit of keeping the corks in drawers, vases, or using them as decorative elements in larger decorations.

At some point, we found ourselves with many bags stuffed with corks. We didn't want to throw them away, so we decided to use the corks we had collected to create a decorative piece we could proudly hang on the walls of our house.

We started by looking for ideas and inspiration on Pinterest, and we soon came across many wine bottle frame designs made with corks. And so the challenge began. We bought a large frame that matched our decor, designed a big wine bottle on the cardboard that came with the frame, and then we started laying down the corks. The corks placed horizontally would serve as the 'filler' of the decoration, while the corks placed vertically created the bottle.

The result was AMAZING! Ever since, we have proudly displayed the artwork on the kitchen wall, and our friends ask for the contact information of the person who created it!

One of the biggest DIY projects I took on was clearing over 100 trees from my own property. It completely transformed the space. What started as a densely shaded lot with no usable yard turned into an open, bright outdoor living area where we could finally enjoy the space around our home.

The project wasn't just about removing trees—it was about creating a place where my family could spend time outside. We carved out a lawn, added a fire pit, and built a backyard layout that felt like an extension of our home. Doing it myself made it even more personal. I was involved in every decision, every cut, and every load of brush.

It took time and a lot of sweat, but it saved us a fortune and gave us something that felt completely our own. That cleared space isn't just a yard—it's where our kids play, where we host friends, and where we unwind after a long day. Personalizing your home doesn't always come from buying decor—it can come from reshaping the land around it with your own hands.

One simple DIY project that made a big difference in my home was creating a gallery wall with framed photos and artwork. I used a mix of family pictures, travel shots, and a few prints that matched my style. It added a personal touch and made the space feel warm and unique. My tip? Plan your layout first by arranging the frames on the floor before hanging them. It's an easy way to make your home feel more like "you"!
