A fan that vents into an attic space instead of outside the building envelope just relocates the moisture problem to a place nobody looks at until there's a stain on the ceiling below. After the remodel, recurrence comes from habits

A renovation can get every technical decision right and still see mold return if the daily habits in that room don't change. Running the bathroom fan for a set time after every shower, not just while the shower is running, matters more than most people assume, since the surfaces keep releasing moisture into the air after the water is off. A simple hygrometer left in a bathroom or basement for a week will show whether the space is actually holding humidity in the range most building scientists recommend, roughly 30 to 50 percent indoors, or whether it's spiking well past that after normal use.

Cleaning routines matter here too, and they don't need anything aggressive. Wiping down tile, grout lines, and shower surfaces with a household cleaner and drying them, rather than letting them air dry on their own, removes the film that mold needs to get established in the first place. Keep supply air moving into a finished basement or bathroom, not just exhaust air moving out, or the room ends up depressurized and pulling humid air from wherever it can find a gap.

The rule I'd give anyone planning a remodel: if the plan doesn't say where the moist air goes once the project is done, the project isn't finished. It's just freshly painted.
